BeatMaker 2 is a free download for iOS that gives you a full mobile studio with drum machines, samplers, and multi-track sequencing. It solves the problem of producing complete music tracks on an iPad or iPhone without needing desktop hardware, packing in a massive library of presets and samples to get you started immediately.
What You Get in the Studio
You get a multi-track production environment built around two main instruments: a Drum Machine and a Keyboard Sampler. Each instrument has its own interface and deep editing capabilities. The Drum Machine gives you up to 128 trigger pads spread across 8 banks, while the Keyboard Sampler provides a 128-key keyboard with a full suite of sound-shaping tools.Instrument Sound Design
For each keyboard instrument, you have a keygroup editor for managing samples. You get volume and filter ADSR envelopes for shaping amplitude and tone. There’s a low/high pass filter with cutoff, resonance, and key tracking. You also have 2 LFOs per instrument, where you can customize the amplitude, offset, and rate, and you can sync the LFO rate to your project tempo. Polyphony goes up to 32 voices per keyboard sampler, and a legato play mode with customizable glide lets you create sliding notes.Effects and Processing
There are 10 effect units included: Reverb, Compressor, Filter, Delay, EQ, Flanger, Chorus, AutoPan, BitCrusher, and Overdrive. Each instrument has 3 effect slots, and you have access to unlimited global effect racks for your master output. A customizable Cross Controller lets you manipulate multiple effect parameters at once from a single touch point.Sample Management and Chopping
The Wave editor provides pinch and selection controls for detailed sample editing. The Chop Lab is a dedicated feature for slicing samples, which can then automatically generate presets and patterns from the slices. For processing, you have audio tools like normalize, silence, reverse, fade in/out, and cross-fade. You can also apply time-stretching and pitch-shifting algorithms to match your project’s tempo and key.The Production Workflow
The core of the workflow is the Multi-Track Sequencer, which supports unlimited instrument and FX tracks. You record and edit in a piano-roll interface. The sequencer includes features for quantizing, overdub recording, pre-roll, and note erasing. You can record automations and edit them directly. For managing your takes, there’s 8 levels of undo/redo.Mixing and Routing
A multi-track mixer provides level meters for each channel. You have standard mixing controls: volume, pan, solo, mute, and bus routing. This lets you group tracks and apply those global effect racks.Recording and Importing
You can record audio directly from your device’s microphone or from an instrument plugged into the input. For building tracks, you can import MIDI files. A unique feature lets you import songs directly from your iPod library to use as source material for remixes.Connectivity and Sharing
BeatMaker 2 is built to connect to other gear and apps. It has full MIDI input, output, virtual port, and sync support. You can control external hardware instruments and other iOS music applications from within BeatMaker. It supports Korg's WIST protocol for wireless sync with other compatible apps. Virtual MIDI support allows communication with other music apps on your device. An integrated FTP server lets you transfer files over a network.For sharing your work, you can export to Audio or MIDI files. There’s iOS pasteboard sharing with more than 20 other music applications. You can upload finished tracks directly to SoundCloud. DropBox integration is built in for cloud storage and project sharing. The file browser includes tagging to help organize your samples and projects.
